10 Things Every UK Taxi Driver Has Heard at Least Once

Whether it's a quick trip to the station, an airport transfer, or a late-night ride home, taxi drivers hear the same phrases time and time again. Some make us smile, some make us laugh, and a few have become legendary!

If you've ever taken a taxi in the UK, there's a good chance you've said at least one of these yourself.

1. "I'll only be two minutes!"

The famous "two minutes."

Every taxi driver knows this can mean anything from two actual minutes to fifteen! Whether you're grabbing your keys, saying goodbye, or just looking for your phone, "two minutes" rarely lasts two minutes.

2. "Can you make it to the airport in 20 minutes?"

We've all been there - running late for a flight.

While we'll always take the best route possible, we can't bend the laws of physics (or the speed limit). The safest journey is always the best journey.

3. "I know a quicker way."

Every passenger has their favourite shortcut.

Sometimes they're right. Sometimes that "shortcut" leads straight into traffic, roadworks, or a dead end. We'll happily listen, but our sat nav - and local knowledge - usually has a good reason for choosing the route.

4. "Do you take card?"

Thankfully, this question is becoming less common as more taxis accept contactless and card payments. Even so, it's always worth checking when you book, especially if you're travelling in a different town or city.

5. "Busy tonight?"

One of the most popular conversation starters!

The answer depends on the day, the weather, football matches, concerts, train delays, and whether everyone suddenly decides to go out at the same time.

6. "Can you wait? I'll only be a minute."

This is the close cousin of "I'll only be two minutes."

Whether you're popping into the shop or collecting a parcel, drivers are usually happy to wait if arranged in advance - but "a minute" has a habit of stretching a little longer than expected!

7. "You must have some stories!"

The answer is... absolutely.

Taxi drivers meet hundreds of people every week. From wedding celebrations and airport adventures to unforgettable nights out, every day brings something different. Of course, the best drivers keep those stories confidential!

8. "The weather's awful!"

If there's one thing Britons love talking about, it's the weather.

Rain, snow, sunshine, fog - no matter the forecast, it's almost guaranteed to become part of the conversation before the journey ends.

9. "Can we stop at the cash machine?"

A quick stop on the way is no problem when it's safe and practical. Just let your driver know before setting off so they can plan the route accordingly.

10. "Thanks, have a great day!"

Our favourite phrase of them all.

A simple "thank you" goes a long way. Taxi drivers work hard to get passengers to their destinations safely, comfortably, and on time, and a kind word is always appreciated.

The Bottom Line

Being a taxi driver is about much more than getting from A to B. Every journey is different, every passenger has a story, and no two days are ever the same.

So, the next time you jump into a taxi, don't worry if you find yourself saying one of these classic phrases. Chances are, your driver has heard it before - and they'll probably smile knowing they're not the only one.

Have you ever said any of these? Or do you have a funny taxi story to share? We'd love to hear about it!
