A Taxi Driver's Shift in 10 Moments Every Driver Will Recognise
No two shifts are ever the same.
That's one of the reasons many of us love the job - and one of the reasons it can drive us up the wall.
You can start the day with a full tank, a clean car and a positive attitude, only to find yourself dealing with road closures, delayed passengers, airport traffic, and a coffee that's gone cold before you've taken the first sip.
If you've spent any time behind the wheel, these moments will probably sound very familiar.
1. "Today's Going to Be a Quiet Shift..."
Every driver has said it.
Usually about five minutes before the dispatch screen lights up with back-to-back bookings - or before nothing happens for the next hour.
Taxi driving has a funny way of proving your predictions wrong.
2. The Passenger Who Says, "I'll Be Two Minutes."
Every driver knows that "two minutes" is one of the most flexible measurements of time ever invented.
Sometimes it really is two minutes.
Sometimes you've watched an entire playlist finish before the front door opens.
3. Every Road Suddenly Has Roadworks
You drove this route yesterday.
It was fine.
Today there's temporary traffic lights, cones everywhere, and a queue stretching around the corner.
No warning. Just another day behind the wheel.
4. The Airport Job That Changes Everything
An airport transfer looks straightforward.
Then the flight lands early.
Or late.
Or the passenger is still waiting for luggage.
Airport runs teach every driver one thing: always expect the unexpected.
5. "Can You Just Stop Here?"
Of course...
...as long as "here" isn't a bus stop, a red route, double yellow lines, or the middle of a busy junction.
Some pickup and drop-off requests deserve an award for creativity.
6. The Sat Nav vs. Local Knowledge Debate
The passenger opens Google Maps.
"You should've turned left."
Meanwhile, you already know the road ahead is closed, there's a school run causing delays, and the shortcut you've used for years will save everyone ten minutes.
Sometimes experience beats technology.
7. The Search for a Clean Toilet
It's one of the least talked-about parts of taxi driving.
When you're working long shifts, knowing where you can grab a decent coffee and find a clean toilet is almost as valuable as knowing the quickest route across town.
Every experienced driver has their favourite stop.
8. The Lost Property Lottery
Phones.
Wallets.
Keys.
Shopping bags.
Even the occasional birthday cake.
If it's been left behind in a taxi, chances are another driver has found one too.
9. The Last Job of the Shift...
You've logged off in your head.
You're already thinking about getting home.
Then dispatch sends one more booking.
"It'll only take 15 minutes..."
Famous last words.
10. Tomorrow You'll Do It All Again
Some days everything runs smoothly.
Other days, absolutely nothing goes to plan.
But that's taxi driving.
No two shifts are ever identical, every passenger has a different story, and every day brings something unexpected.
That's what keeps the job interesting.
Over to You...
Which moment made you smile because you've lived it yourself?
Or what's one situation that every taxi driver experiences but never makes the list?
