The Fairytale of the Great Autostable
A story about the past, the present… and perhaps the future of our industry.
Every fairytale begins with "Once upon a time."
But every so often, one comes along that's just a little too close to the truth.
This is one of them.
A long time ago...
In a kingdom not so different from our own...
People travelled by horse and cart.
From the smallest villages to the grandest cities, skilled carriage masters carried travellers safely from place to place.
Every village had its own stable.
Every stable had its own trusted horsemen.
They knew every winding lane.
Every shortcut.
Every bridge.
And more often than not...
They knew their passengers by name.
The work was honest.
The fares were fair.
The roads belonged to the communities they served.
And while few grew wealthy...
Most earned enough to provide for their families and take pride in their trade.
Among all the stables in the kingdom...
One stood above the rest.
It was known far and wide as The Great Autostable.
It did not compete with the local stables.
It connected them.
If one stable could not help a traveller...
Another could.
If a carriage was needed in a distant village...
The Great Autostable would help find one.
It quietly linked the kingdom together.
Every road.
Every stable.
Every journey.
Trusted by horsemen.
Respected by stable masters.
And relied upon by the people.
For many years...
It became part of the very heart of the kingdom.
But beyond the horizon...
Across distant seas...
Something was coming.
Not with swords.
Not with armies.
But with a different kind of power.
A kind of magic...
The horsemen had never seen before.
The tall ships came without warning.
They sailed from lands far beyond the kingdom.
Their banners were unfamiliar.
Their language was different.
And with them...
They brought a kind of magic the kingdom had never seen before.
In their hands they carried glowing glass.
Small enough to fit inside a pocket.
Yet powerful enough to summon a carriage from almost anywhere.
Raise it into the air.
Touch it just once.
And almost as if by magic...
A carriage would appear.
No call.
No waiting at the stable.
No speaking to the keeper.
No searching the streets.
Just a carriage arriving...
As though it already knew the way.
The people were astonished.
They spoke of it in marketplaces.
In taverns.
In every village and every town.
"What wonderful magic."
"So simple."
"So easy."
"So clever."
And before long...
The whispers became excitement.
The excitement became belief.
And belief spread across the kingdom like a rising tide.
The merchants smiled.
Then they spoke.
"Why wait for a carriage when one can come to you?"
"Why pay yesterday's prices when today can be cheaper?"
"The future has arrived."
"And it belongs to everyone."
The horsemen watched carefully.
Some were cautious.
Others were curious.
The merchants noticed.
So they made an irresistible offer.
"Come with us."
"Ride when you choose."
"Work whenever you wish."
"Earn more coin than ever before."
"No stable master."
"No rules."
"Only freedom."
It sounded almost too good to be true.
Yet to many...
It was exactly what they had been waiting to hear.
One by one...
Horsemen began leaving their old stables.
Some seeking opportunity.
Some chasing greater earnings.
Some simply unwilling to be left behind.
Soon the kingdom had more carriages than ever before.
More horses upon the roads.
More wheels turning through every town.
Passengers waited less.
Journeys became quicker.
Drivers earned well.
The merchants celebrated.
And for a while...
Everyone believed this new magic had changed the kingdom forever.
But every spell...
No matter how beautiful...
Has a price.
And not every promise...
Survives the passing of time.
The roads grew busier than ever before.
More carts upon the streets.
More horsemen answering the call.
More wheels turning from dawn until dusk.
From a distance...
The kingdom looked stronger than ever.
But beneath the surface...
Something had begun to change.
The coin in each horseman's pouch grew lighter.
The days became longer.
The nights stretched further.
And the promise that had once drawn so many to these roads...
No longer shone as brightly.
The horsemen chased journey after journey.
Each hoping the next fare would make the day worthwhile.
Each believing one more ride...
One more mile...
Would somehow make the numbers add up.
Yet many found themselves working harder than ever...
For less than ever before.
Across the kingdom...
The whispers grew louder.
"We ride further... yet earn less."
"How can that be?"
Then something happened...
Something the kingdom had never witnessed before.
The horsemen stood together.
Stable owners.
Drivers.
Families.
United by a single hope.
That the roads might once again become fair.
That promises once made...
Would be honoured.
That those carrying the kingdom...
Would finally be heard.
But not everyone could stop riding.
Some still had families to feed.
Some had horses to keep.
Some simply could not afford to wait.
So while many stood together...
Others continued working.
Not because they wished to.
Because they had no choice.
And quietly...
The roads became divided.
While the horsemen looked toward one another...
The merchants looked elsewhere.
And they made perhaps their greatest move of all.
At the very heart of the kingdom stood something every stable relied upon.
The Great Autostable.
A place that quietly connected every stable.
Every rider.
Every road.
It asked no questions.
It simply helped the kingdom move.
Then one day...
With wealth beyond imagination...
And magic powerful enough to change the course of history...
The merchants arrived.
And with scarcely a whisper...
They declared,
"The Great Autostable... now belongs to us."
A silence settled across the land.
For the very heart of the kingdom...
Had quietly changed hands.
At first...
They promised nothing would change.
The roads would remain the same.
The work would continue.
The magic would simply become...
Better.
Many believed them.
Why wouldn't they?
But magic has a curious way of revealing itself.
Slowly.
Quietly.
Almost unnoticed.
Until one day...
Everyone realises the road feels different.
Journeys no longer flowed quite as they once had.
Some stables prospered.
Others grew strangely quiet.
Some found work arriving more easily.
Others wondered where it had gone.
No one could quite explain it.
But everyone could feel it.
Some welcomed the new magic.
Their carts remained busy.
Their wheels continued turning.
Though the coin grew lighter...
The work kept coming.
So they stayed.
Trusting the spell.
Others looked beyond the glow.
The wiser horsemen recognised something deeper.
Magic that dazzled...
But quietly shifted who truly controlled the road.
They called to those around them.
"Break the spell.
See the road for what it is.
Magic should serve the kingdom...
Not the merchant."
Some listened.
Some turned away.
And as with every kingdom...
There were always those who laughed.
The jesters.
The doubters.
The ones convinced nothing would ever really change.
Until one day...
It already had.
Without swords.
Without armies.
Without conquest.
The merchants no longer stood beside the roads.
They stood above them.
Guiding the journeys.
Directing the flow.
Holding the map.
Choosing which paths would prosper...
And which would slowly disappear.
The kingdom was no longer simply changing.
It was being reshaped.
Now the whispers echo across the land once more.
Of stronger magic.
Closer than ever before.
Of carts that move with no one inside.
No reins to hold.
No horseman guiding the way.
No driver needed.
No wages to pay.
Just silent wheels...
Rolling endlessly down the road.
Some still laugh.
But fewer than before.
Because they've seen this story unfold before.
Just never quite like this.
A question now hangs over every stable.
What becomes of the trade...
When the journeys remain...
But no longer need the hands that once carried them?
And what of the merchants?
Will they claim even more of the kingdom?
Will they grow ever wealthier through the work of others?
Will the coin earned on these roads each day continue to leave the towns where it was earned...
Never to return?
Or...
Does the story change...
Right here?
Because across the kingdom...
Something else is beginning to stir.
Not with noise.
Not through protest.
But through understanding.
The wisest horsemen are beginning to realise that no stable can stand alone forever.
Not while every stable fights its neighbour...
And the merchants quietly collect the rewards.
They begin calling to one another.
"Stand together... or fall apart.
For divided roads... will always break the cart."
Not everyone listens.
Some continue chasing every journey.
Some still trust the spell.
Some believe everything will somehow work itself out.
Others say,
"I'll take every job."
"I can't afford not to."
And who could blame them?
Every horseman rides a different road.
Every family carries different burdens.
Every stable faces different challenges.
The true enemy was never the horseman beside you.
It was forgetting who truly controlled the road.
Then...
Away from the great castles...
Far from the merchants' towers...
In a quiet stable...
A different kind of magic begins to appear.
Not built for power.
Not built to control.
Not built to take.
But built to restore balance.
A wizard works.
Not with illusion.
But with purpose.
He believes the roads should serve those who travel them...
And those who dedicate their lives to keeping them moving.
That technology should strengthen communities...
Not weaken them.
That the wealth created on local roads...
Should remain within local communities.
That drivers should share in the value they create.
And slowly...
Quietly...
Word begins to spread.
Of something different.
Of something fairer.
Of drivers helping drivers.
Of local businesses standing together.
Of a road built not on control...
But on partnership.
Because perhaps...
The greatest magic was never inside the merchants' glowing glass.
Perhaps it was always within the people themselves.
The horsemen.
The stable owners.
The families.
The communities that built these roads.
Because when good people stand together...
Even the strongest spell can be broken.
The ending has not yet been written.
The road ahead still divides.
One path leads to greater control.
Another to greater dependence.
But another...
Leads somewhere entirely different.
A road built on community.
On fairness.
On partnership.
On drivers shaping their own future.
So now...
The question belongs to every driver.
Will you help shape what comes next...
Or simply carry it there?
Because the road ahead...
Is still unwritten.
But not for long.
